In the UK, Fuel Cells Works reported that China’s hydrogen production capacity exceeded 51 million tons a year by the end of 2025, while actual production rose to more than 39 million tons as the country continued expanding across hydrogen production, transport and end-use markets.
The figures were published in the China Hydrogen Energy Development Report 2026, released by China’s National Energy Administration on August 11. Total hydrogen production capacity increased by around 1.4% year on year, while actual output jumped approximately 7.3%.
China had more than one million tons a year of renewable hydrogen capacity either operating or under construction at the end of 2025. More than 250,000 tons a year had been commissioned — more than double the level at the end of 2024 — while projects under construction exceeded 900,000 tons annually. Electrolysis remains the main production route.
China now accounts for 53% of global renewable hydrogen production capacity, according to the report.
