Caribbean sargassum emerges as feedstock for SAF
In Argentina, AviacionLine reported that the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and various stakeholders across the aviation industry are evaluating the technical and economic feasibility of using sargassum seaweed to produce SAF in the Caribbean.
“No single feedstock will meet global demand for Sustainable Aviation Fuel on its own,” said Sylvain Verdier, Strategy Manager at Topsoe. “Expanding the portfolio of sustainable feedstocks, including sustainable marine biomass, is essential to scale up renewable fuel production and accelerate the energy transition of hard-to-abate transport modes such as aviation and shipping,” he added.
To move toward the implementation stage, Annaleen Lord, IATA’s Area Manager for the Caribbean, stressed that establishing a pilot project with government support is essential. Turning sargassum from an environmental liability into an energy resource requires validating the integration of this marine biomass into local refining and distribution systems, according to the report.
