Brazil seen as likely origin for China’s 10 million tons of ethanol import demand
In China, China Dialogue reports that Brazil is likely to be the main origin of ethanol imports that will be required to bridge the gap between its 3 million metric tons of ethanol production and the 15 million tons required to achieve its planned E10 blending mandate by 2020. Estimates are that domestic ethanol production could reach 5 million tons by then, leaving a 10 million import gap. China is Brazil’s largest trading partner and after having resolved a WTO dispute earlier this year on sugar tariffs, the expectation is that ethanol trade will likely follow.
