Biodiesel plants at just 77% operation capacity in May
In Washington, EnergyNow reports U.S. biodiesel producers are struggling to expand output fast enough to meet the Trump administration’s biofuel ambitions. In May, plants operated at roughly 77% of capacity, below the EPA’s assumption of 90% utilization for its mandates. Producers generated 736 million biomass-based diesel RINs, compared with about 915 million needed that month, raising concerns about compliance costs and supply. The shortfall has prompted the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers to sue and urge lawmakers to reconsider the 2026 mandates. The gap highlights challenges in scaling production despite stronger policy support.
