Bankinter Investment and Plenium Partners buy Italian biogas plants
In Spain, Bankinter Investment SGIIC and Plenium Partners SGEIC, firms that have recently approved the merger of their managers and that are partners since 2017, have acquired 100% of BG Holding S.r.l., in the biomethane sector in Italy, through the Ecualia Capital fund, to Green Arrow – Italy’s main independent group specializing in private markets and alternative investments and one of the benchmarks in Europe, with 8,000 million euros in managed assets.
BG Holding is the parent company of two biogas plants in operation, Bioenergie Italia Soc. Agr. S.r.l. and ER Società Agricola a r.l., both located in Aprilia, in the province of Latina (Lazio region). This operation is another step in the commitment of Bankinter Investment and Plenium Partners with sustainability, renewable energies and the development of new projects in this country, where the platform already has several plants that add up to a production close to 750 scm/h (standard cubic meters per hour) of biomethane, through the Ecualia Capital fund.
The two plants, originally built as agricultural biogas facilities, are being converted for biomethane production. Once the conversion is over, each plant will produce 517 scm/h (standard cubic meters per hour) of biomethane, which will be injected directly into the national gas network – Bioenergie Italia through Snam Rete Gas and ER Pantanelle through Italgas – with the start of the commercial operation planned between July and September 2026. Together, both plants will process approximately 120,000 tons per year of livestock and agro-industrial derivatives, including animal by-products and agricultural waste.
Both plants were awarded in the third biomethane tariff auction organized by GSE, the Italian energy transition agency, which guarantees a stable and regulated source of income in the long term. Once fully operational, the plants are expected to produce approximately 90 GWh of renewable biomethane a year, equivalent to the average annual gas consumption of some 6,000 Italian dwellings, and prevent the emission of about 18,000 tons of CO2 a year by replacing fossil-based natural gas.
