Austria Backs Hydrogen-to-Methanol Project with $118 million

February 26, 2026 |

In the UK, Fuel Cells Works reported that Austria’s Ministry for Economic Affairs, Energy and Tourism has formally launched a green hydrogen project at Hallein and pledged $118 million in public funding.

The plan brings together Verbund and AustroCel Hallein to add a 20MW electrolyzer to an operating biorefinery, with the hydrogen fed straight into e-methanol production using biogenic CO2 already on site, according to the report.

If delivered as planned, the Hallein project is expected to lift Austria’s domestic hydrogen output by roughly 60% from 2030, turning a biorefinery into a multi-vector decarbonization asset and testing whether e-methanol can graduate from policy promise to bankable product, the report added.
