Andritz to build 12.5-MW green H2 plant for RAG Austria
In Bulgaria, Renewables Now reported that Austrian plant engineering group Andritz said it has launched the construction of a 12.5-MW green hydrogen plant, touted as its home country’s largest one, on behalf of gas storage operator RAG Austria AG.
The facility will be located in Gampern, Upper Austria, and will be capable of producing around 17 million cubic meters, equal to over 1,500 tons, of green hydrogen annually. It will mainly use solar electricity for the water electrolysis process, helping store surplus renewable power generated in the summer for use during periods of high energy demand. Thus, RAG Austria will be able to create large-scale seasonal energy storage capacity, making renewable energy available for electricity and heat production in winter, according to the report.
Andritz will act as the project’s engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor, overseeing the installation and commissioning of the plant and the systems for hydrogen purification and compression. It expects the plant to begin commercial operations at the end of this year, the report added.
