Acwa nears RFNBO certification for 4.4 GW Saudi hydrogen project

May 28, 2026 |

In Bulgaria, Renewables Now reported that Saudi power and water company Acwa is getting a step closer to receiving a certification that its planned 4.4 GW hydrogen and ammonia production hub meets the European standards for renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO).

A pre-certification assessment, carried out by German consulting and engineering firm Ludwig-Boelkow-Systemtechnik (LBST), confirmed that the project in the Saudi port city of Yanbu is in line with the RFNBO requirements, according to the report.

The overall initiative includes the construction of renewable electricity generation systems, desalination plants, 4.4 GW of electrolyzers, ammonia conversion facilities and an export terminal.

The hub is expected to generate 2.5 million tons of green ammonia annually, equivalent to 400,000 tons of green hydrogen. This will require up to 10 GW of renewable capacity, with the electricity delivered via a 400 km transmission line, the report added.
