Indian sugar millers want government to boost sugar and ethanol prices in line with cane

May 7, 2026 |

In India, Fortune India reports the Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) is calling on the government to boost the price of sugar and ethanol so they align with the price mills have to pay farmers for sugarcane. On Tuesday, he government raised the Fair and Remunerative Price for farmers for the 2026/27 season that begins in October. Though the ISMA says it agrees that farmers should receive higher prices for cane, it says the increased cost of feedstock should be compensated through higher prices paid to the mills as well.
