Uniper wins preliminary nod for 890-MW hydrogen-ready gas power plant

May 7, 2026 |

In Bulgaria, Renewables Now reported that German energy group Uniper SE has received preliminary approval to build a hydrogen-ready combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant with a planned electrical feed-in capacity of up to 890 MW, aimed at providing flexible, dispatchable power generation in Germany.

The preliminary approval was issued by the Darmstadt Regional Authority and relates to a plant dubbed Unit 8, which will be constructed at the site of the Staudinger power station in Grosskrotzenburg, according to the report.

With the project, Uniper plans to participate in tenders envisioned by Germany’s proposed electricity supply security and capacity law StromVKG, whose goal is to establish backup capacity for periods when solar and wind generation is not sufficient, the report added.

Uniper now plans to apply for a partial permit covering subsurface infrastructure in the third quarter of 2026. A second partial permit submission for construction and operation of the plant will follow in the second quarter of 2027, the company said.
