FortisBC reaches 10,000 LNG bunkering deliveries on Canada’s West Coast

May 7, 2026 |

In Canada, FortisBC Energy reports completing its 10,000th LNG refuelling event for marine vessels, a decade after launching bunkering operations at the Port of Vancouver in 2016.

Recent firsts recorded at the port include Canada’s first ship-to-ship LNG transfer, the first LNG bunkering of a car carrier, and the first cruise ship bound for Alaska fuelled with LNG. A container vessel in English Bay also received the first ship-to-ship LNG transfer of its type. FortisBC produces LNG at its Tilbury facility and delivers through Seaspan Energy bunker vessels.

A proprietary tanker-truck system developed with Seaspan Ferries and BC Ferries allows LNG fuelling directly aboard vessels. The Seaspan Swift was the first vessel in North America to receive LNG fuel via delivery truck on an open vehicle deck.
