India to produce green methanol marine fuel from invasive shrub

May 7, 2026 |

In India, Chem Industry Digest reports that Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla is developing the country’s first green methanol facility, using Prosopis juliflora, an invasive Mexican-origin shrub that has displaced native grasses across Gujarat’s Banni grasslands, as its primary feedstock.

The plant will produce around five tonnes of methanol per day for supply to ocean-going vessels. Pune-based Thermax Energy is executing the project with gasification technology from Ankur Scientific. The port authority will own and operate the facility once complete.

The project’s full carbon credentials depend on whether grid electricity powering the plant is eventually replaced by renewable sources.
