India study favors methanol for regional marine fuel hub
In India, existing port traffic could provide the foundation for a competitive regional alternative marine fuel hub, starting with methanol, according to a study supported by the International Maritime Organization.
The study recommends initial development at four ports: Mundra, Jawaharlal Nehru, Chennai and Tuticorin, with a potential methanol pilot project at Mundra supplied from Deendayal Port in Kandla.
Biofuels and methanol are expected to drive early demand, followed by ammonia once infrastructure and safety frameworks mature. The proposed timeline calls for initial operations through 2030, expansion through 2035 and multifuel bunkering and green shipping corridors by 2047.
The findings will inform India’s developing National Green Shipping Policy, connecting maritime decarbonization with energy security, industrial development and reduced dependence on imported fossil fuels.
