China selects electric shipping route for national demonstration

October 22, 2026 |

In China, a planned 98 kilometer electric shipping route between Changzhou and Zhenjiang has been selected for a national inland vessel demonstration program under a 2026 to 2030 government initiative to expand cleaner water transport, the Changzhou Transportation Bureau reported Oct. 15.

The route will primarily carry ferronickel cargo from Liyang, with annual freight volumes of 2 million metric tons. Service is expected to begin by year’s end.

Three charging and battery swapping stations are planned along the route. One is operational, with the remaining two under development.

Changzhou also reported that its electric cargo vessel Lianhang Shidai 001 completed navigation trials, with carbon emissions more than 90% lower and operating costs about 30% below conventional fuel vessels.

By 2030, the city aims to establish a 200 kilometer zero carbon shipping network with four operating routes.
