Shanghai completes first biomethanol bunkering for inland vessel
In China, Shanghai Port completed its first biomethanol bunkering of an inland waterway vessel Oct. 15 at Luodong Container Terminal, using fuel produced by a pilot project that converts methane and carbon dioxide from biogas directly into green methanol, Shanghai Observer reports.
The biomethanol was produced through a project involving Fujie Technology, East China University of Science and Technology, Chengtou Laogang and SIPG Energy. The process achieves nearly 100% carbon utilization, according to the developers.
A pilot plant with capacity of about 1,000 metric tons was completed in January, producing methanol that meets international marine fuel standards and holds ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS certifications. The developers report lifecycle emissions reductions exceeding EU benchmarks by more than 30 percentage points.
The bunkering completes the project’s fuel delivery validation, with SIPG Energy and Fujie Technology agreeing to pursue further demonstrations and commercial applications at Shanghai Port.
