Cellugy scales cellulose rheology modifier to 15k liters

October 19, 2026 |

In Denmark, cellulose-based materials firm Cellugy has scaled production of its biobased skincare ingredients by a factor of ten. Cellugy uses microbial fermentation to produce biobased exopolysaccharides that provide thickening, stabilization, sensory and bioactive benefits as alternatives to petrochemical- and microplastic-based ingredients. Its first product, EcoFLEXY Rheo, is a cellulose-based rheology modifier for personal care that delivers suspension, stability and sensory performance without fossil-derived ingredients.

“Scaling production to 15,000 liters is more than an operational achievement,” said Koen Paesmans, Chief Commercial Officer of Cellugy, as reported by Green Queen. “It is a commercial validation that enables deeper engagement with strategic customers and manufacturing partners.”

The production milestone was achieved in partnership with the Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant, an open-access industrial biotech facility in Ghent, Belgium, and closely follows an €8.1 million (USD$9.08 million) grant from the EU’s Life Programme.
