Indonesia pushes ethanol expansion to curb gasoline imports, targets E50 blending

October 16, 2026 |

Indonesia is preparing to gradually increase ethanol blending in petrol to E50 by 2028 as part of efforts to reduce gasoline imports and strengthen domestic energy security, according to Coordinating Minister for Downstreaming and Energy Transition Bahlil Lahadalia.

Speaking at the 3rd National Working Meeting of the Association of Indigenous Indonesian Entrepreneurs (HIPPI) in Jakarta, Bahlil said the government was finalizing a roadmap to introduce higher ethanol blends in line with the country’s domestic production capacity.

He emphasized that the blending mandate must be supported by adequate domestic ethanol supplies to avoid dependence on imported feedstock.

To secure feedstock supplies, the government has identified potential cultivation areas across Java, Sumatra and Papua. The estimated land requirements include one million hectares for cassava, 1.1 million hectares for sugarcane and another one million hectares for corn, according to the report.
