ABS and DOE join forces on nuclear-powered ships

October 14, 2026 |

In the United States, the American Bureau of Shipping and the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy signed an agreement to advance commercial maritime nuclear technology, including nuclear-powered vessels, floating power plants and the shipyards, ports and industrial infrastructure needed to support them.

The agreement, announced in Washington, D.C., includes feasibility studies for floating nuclear power and nuclear transportation routes, along with technical, regulatory, economic and policy work to develop a U.S. maritime nuclear sector.

ABS will co-manage the Maritime Nuclear Applications Group and coordinate related activities through the U.S. Maritime Administration’s Center for Maritime Innovation.

“Advanced nuclear technology is moving from concept to application, and the maritime industry needs to be ready for it,” said ABS Chairman and CEO John McDonald.
