From sea to tee: UMaine creates fairway-friendly golf peg
In Maine, a research team at University of Maine has converted waste lobster shells into biodegradable bioplastic golf tees. “[The tees] will actually add nutrients to the soil from the binder itself, and then the lobster shell also has nutrients,” UMaine graduate student Isabelle Irani told News Center Maine. And because a golf tee’s purpose is relatively limited—hold up a golf ball—golfers never know the difference.
However, the production process is far from commercial-scale, with it taking an hour to produce 3-6 tees. “We are hoping eventually that a company will come in and license this technology,” lead researcher Dave Neivandt said.
