Imerys creates greener graphite

October 12, 2026 |

In Switzerland, Imerys Graphite and Carbon Switzerland Ltd. has unveiled a biomass-based, industrial-scale graphite with an even lower carbon footprint than an earlier iteration.

Dubbed SU-NERGY™, the graphite targets a “Cradle-to-Gate” climate impact below 0.1 kg CO2e/kg and is produced at the company’s Bodio site. By combining biomass residues and 100% low-carbon electricity, the new process further reduces the carbon footprint of synthetic graphite.

“When we launched the SU-NERGY series last year, we promised it was just the beginning of our journey to reshape the graphite landscape,” said Frank Wittchen, Vice President & General Manager, Graphite & Carbon Division at Imerys. “This innovation serves as a crucial enabler for our customers. It helps them meet their decarbonization targets while securing a localized, resilient European supply chain.”
