MOL and Vale triple down on ore carrier fuel options
In Singapore, MOL Ocean Bulk has signed a 25-year iron ore transportation contract with Vale International for two 210,000 deadweight ton carriers scheduled for completion in 2030, using engines capable of switching between ethanol, methanol and heavy fuel oil to reduce shipping emissions.
The vessels, described by MOL as the world’s first ore carriers of their size with three fuel options, will primarily transport iron ore from Vale’s Brazil operations to China. They will also feature specifications accommodating future use of LNG or ammonia and incorporate energy saving technologies.
Citing Vale, MOL said ethanol could reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by approximately 90% compared with heavy fuel oil.
The companies also intend to work with partners on ethanol and methanol procurement, supply and bunkering to support the vessels’ operations.
