Colorado launches $14M fund for methane reduction from landfills

September 30, 2026 |

In Colorado, the state health department’s Air Pollution Control Division launched the Landfill Methane Mitigation Grant Program. The reimbursement fund provides about $14 million through 2029 to help landfill operators reduce methane emissions faster than required under Colorado Air Quality Control Commission Regulation 31.

In December 2025, the state adopted the rule to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from municipal solid waste landfills. This type of landfill accepts household and commercial waste and primarily emits methane as organic matter in the landfill breaks down. By 2050, the air division estimates the standard will reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to burning nearly 1.41 billion gallons of gasoline.

The division designed the grant program after securing funding through the EPA’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grants subprogram, authorized under the federal Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.
