Kelpi’s seaweed coating enables paper sachets for liquids
In the United Kingdom, seaweed-based materials startup Kelpi has partnered with cleaning product B Corp Bower Collective to launch what the companies call the world’s first paper sachet containing a liquid product.
The sample box contains three 5 mL sachets of Bower Collective’s bestselling Hand Wash scents — Orange Blossom & Mimosa, Pistachio & Vanilla, and the recently launched Wild Peach. The paper uses a biobased coating derived from renewably sourced seaweed that is designed to match the performance of fossil-fuel-based plastic.
Guardpack, the UK’s longest-established sachet and wet wipe producer, manufactured and filled the sachets using its existing production lines. According to Kelpi, no equipment modifications were required, demonstrating that its material can run on standard converting and filling machinery without the need for bespoke equipment.
“Running the coated paper on Guardpack’s existing sachet-filling lines, with no equipment changes required, demonstrates that Kelpi’s material is a genuine drop-in solution,” Kelpi said in a press statement.
