Spain sets carbon targets for marine fuel suppliers
In Spain, Manifold Times reports Royal Decree 611/2026 will require marine fuel suppliers serving domestic shipping to reduce the greenhouse gas intensity of the fuel they sell, with the obligation placed on suppliers rather than vessel operators.
The required reduction starts at 6.5% in 2027 and rises to 33% by 2040. Spanish ports must also report annually on the fuel and electricity they supply.
PortXchange compared the Spanish approach with rules introduced in the Netherlands in January. It said Rotterdam bunker sales fell by 648,399 tonnes in the first quarter to their lowest level since 2009, with some volume moving to ports where equivalent supplier obligations were not in force.
