NYK completes ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering for new gas carrier
In Japan, NYK Line completed ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering on September 17 at Japan Marine United’s Ariake Shipyard, transferring fuel from the ammonia carrier Shoei Maru to an ammonia-fueled medium gas carrier ahead of sea trials and planned delivery in November.
NYK said it was the world’s first ship-to-ship supply of ammonia fuel to an ammonia-fueled vessel.
The vessels were connected by hose for the direct transfer. NYK and its project partners established operating procedures beforehand to address ammonia’s toxicity and the safety requirements for handling the fuel.
The receiving vessel is in the final stage of construction. NYK said the bunkering provided practical experience for establishing ship-to-ship ammonia fuel supply operations as ammonia-fueled vessels move toward commercial deployment.
