Viking’s second hydrogen cruise ship making ready
In Italy, Viking floated out its second hydrogen powered cruise ship, Viking Astrea, at Fincantieri’s Ancona Shipyard, moving the vessel into final construction ahead of delivery in May 2027. The 998 passenger ship will use a hybrid propulsion system based partly on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells, allowing it to operate with zero emissions.
Fincantieri subsidiary Isotta Fraschini Motori is supplying the fuel cell technology, which can produce up to six megawatts of power. Following the two day float out process, Astrea will move to an outfitting dock for final construction and interior work.
The ship will spend its first season in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Its sister ship Viking Libra, Viking’s first hydrogen powered cruise ship capable of zero emission operation, is scheduled for delivery in November 2026.
