Yokogawa to automate world’s largest liquefied hydrogen carrier
In Japan, Yokogawa Electric won orders from Kawasaki Heavy Industries to supply automation and safety systems for a 40,000 cubic meter liquefied hydrogen carrier, set to be the world’s largest, and two hydrogen fueled vessels being developed to advance large scale hydrogen transport and marine propulsion. The systems will monitor and control onboard equipment, including emergency shutdown functions needed to handle hydrogen at extremely low temperatures.
Yokogawa will also automate the marine hydrogen fuel systems on the two hydrogen fueled vessels, covering their liquefied hydrogen tanks and fuel supply equipment.
The ships are being built under a Green Innovation Fund project led by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization. Yokogawa said it is adapting control and safety expertise developed for LNG carriers to the emerging liquefied hydrogen supply chain.
