Bioplastic models help medical students practice suture skills
The models are 3D printed using filaments made of the common bioplastic polylactic acid. Alternatives such as silicone mats, foam blocks and fruit skins lack the “tactile realism” of human skin, according to an article in Bioengineer.
The model replicates anatomical features of the cheek, nasal ala and nasolabial fold, including lesions resembling basal cell carcinoma and a wound, and costs about €0.62 (US$0.72) per model to produce. When introduced into a second-year dermatology course, the models were well received, with most surveyed students reporting that it closely resembled real anatomy and increased their confidence in performing biopsies on patients.
