Shanghai Electric begins Taonan green fuel expansion
In China, Shanghai Electric Group formally launched Phase II of its Taonan project in Jilin Province on August 20, adding planned annual capacity of 200,000 tons of green methanol and 10,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel.
The project will combine wind, solar, energy storage and biomass in an off grid direct connection system. Shanghai Electric said it will use water electrolysis for hydrogen production, pressurized biomass gasification and methanol synthesis, alongside Fischer Tropsch technology for SAF.
Phase I established a production chain linking renewable electricity, green hydrogen, biomass and green methanol. Its methanol is moved by road from Taonan to Dalian Port, then shipped south for bunkering at Shanghai’s Yangshan Port, giving the project an established route from inland production to marine bunkering.
