IAEA brings nuclear shipping push to Washington
In Washington, D.C., the Vienna, Austria based International Atomic Energy Agency will convene governments, regulators, shipping companies and nuclear technology developers on August 26 and 27 to launch the Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea initiative, focused on the rules, standards and infrastructure needed to deploy small modular reactors aboard civilian ships and floating nuclear power plants.
The forum will tackle legal and regulatory barriers, international standards, nuclear safety and security, safeguards, liability, ship classification, fuel cycle requirements and radioactive waste management. The IAEA says nuclear propulsion could support higher speed commercial shipping without frequent refueling, while floating nuclear plants could supply power to coastal and remote communities and industry.
Participants will also review proposed ATLAS project groups and help shape their scope and future work. The IAEA plans to use that input to develop a roadmap for nuclear applications at sea and identify areas where nuclear and maritime regulations need greater international alignment.
