Shanghai sets world record green methanol bunkering

August 19, 2026 |

In China, Shanghai Electric supplied over 8,000 tonnes of domestically produced green methanol to CMA CGM’s 13,000 TEU dual fuel containership CMA CGM OSMIUM at Shanghai Port on Aug. 15 and 16, setting a world record for a single biomethanol bunkering. The operation more than doubled the previous record of 3,643 tonnes set in Shanghai in March.

Most of the fuel came from Shanghai Electric’s green methanol project in Taonan, Jilin province, which combines biomass including corn stalks with green hydrogen produced using wind power. The methanol was transported from Taonan to Dalian for storage before being shipped to Shanghai for bunkering.

Shanghai Electric President Zhu Zhaokai said the operation “marks the completion of a full industry chain covering large scale green methanol production, land and sea transport and storage, port bunkering and shipboard use, helping advance zero emission global shipping.”
