Researchers work to develop hydrogen storage for passenger ships

In the UK, Fuel Cells Works reported that researchers from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, together with colleagues from Meyer Werft and the Helmut Schmidt University of the Bundeswehr Hamburg (HSU), are developing an innovative hydrogen storage facility for the port operation of a passenger ship. The on-board system is intended to enable zero-emission energy supply.

The aim of the H2MASS project is to develop an integrated hydrogen energy system for large passenger ships. The focus is on an innovative hydrogen storage system based on metal hydrides. Metal hydrides are pulverulent metals that chemically store hydrogen atoms in their lattice structure. The storage density is thus significantly higher than with conventional high-pressure tanks. In addition, metal hydrides require a lower pressure to store the hydrogen and moderate temperatures to release it again. This makes your operation safe and energy efficient, according to the report.

Over a project period of 48 months, the partners develop a shipbuilding-integrable energy system with a target capacity of 4 MW to cover the hotel load in port operation. 

Researchers from the Hereon Institute for Hydrogen Technology are developing a scalable metal hydride-based hydrogen storage module and are realizing a demonstrator that is being tested under realistic conditions. Together with the Helmut Schmidt University, the project is complemented by the development of a digital twin of the storage system in order to enable simulation-based optimization and digital upscaling for use on real ships, the report added.
