Polaris orders tri-fuel ore carriers for Vale project
In China, Dazhong Daily reports Beihai Shipbuilding signed a contract with South Korean shipowner Polaris Shipping for four 210,000 deadweight tonne tri-fuel ore carriers for Brazilian mining giant Vale’s green fuel vessel project.
The Newcastlemax ships will be able to run on ethanol, methanol or conventional fuel. Beihai’s new generation Sirius series also incorporates wind power, shore power, and shaft generators to reduce fuel consumption and operating emissions.
According to the report, using ethanol as the primary fuel could cut greenhouse gas emissions by about 90% compared with heavy fuel oil.
This order follows Beihai’s previous 325,000 deadweight tonne tri-fuel ore carrier for Vale and marks its first contract with Polaris Shipping.
