Long Beach launches first U.S. port study of nuclear-powered ships
In Washington, the Port of Long Beach signed a memorandum of cooperation with the U.S. Maritime Administration to study the infrastructure, safety and regulatory requirements for commercial ships powered by small modular reactors.
Long Beach said it is the first U.S. port to formally examine how nuclear-powered commercial vessels could be accommodated. The port will work with MARAD, the U.S. Department of Energy, Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Coast Guard on the study.
