Shanghai fuels car carrier through local waste-to-methanol chain
In China, at the Port of Shanghai, EUKOR’s first methanol dual-fuel car carrier, Arctic Tern, received more than 2,800 tonnes of locally produced green methanol on July 17. Methanol bunkering took place during simultaneous cargo loading, reducing the car carrier’s time in port. The operation demonstrated a supply chain in which the fuel is produced, stored and bunkered entirely within Shanghai, cutting cost and distance compared to bringing green methanol from other regions.
The methanol came from a 100,000-tonne-per-year project that converts municipal waste, food waste, livestock manure and other organic residues into biomethane. Shanghai energy company Shenergy gathers the biomethane through the city’s natural gas network and sends it to Huayi Group for conversion into green methanol at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park. The fuel was transferred at Vopak’s terminal to SIPG Energy for delivery in the port using the bunker vessel Haigang Zhiyuan.
