Spain’s BZERO raises $1.7M to boost bioplastics production
In Spain, a company developing bioplastics from renewable resources, including agricultural residues and algae, has raised €1.5 million (US$1.7 million) in seed funding. BZERO’s thermoplastic starch technology produces home-compostable films as thin as seven microns while maintaining mechanical properties comparable to conventional plastics.
“The plastic transition only works if bio-based alternatives can compete on cost, performance, and scale,” cofounder José Espí told Packaging Insights. “We have built BZERO around that principle from the start. This round gives us the resources to move from proof-of-concept to commercial volumes — and to do it while holding the performance standards our customers and partners require.”
The funds will be used to boost BZERO’s production capacity, currently at 300 metric tons annually. The round included new investors Impact Shakers Ventures and Viscofan, as well as follow-on investments from Ship2B Ventures, CTL Investments and Torribas.
