Korea trials first ammonia dual-fuel vessel
In Korea, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries ran the country’s first ammonia dual-fuel vessel through sea trials, operating its engine and ammonia fuel supply system to support Korean Register’s development of domestic standards for ammonia-powered ships and green shipping corridors.
The trial tested how the propulsion system and fuel equipment performed under actual operating conditions at sea. Korean Register will use the results to prepare national guidelines for the safe operation of ammonia-fueled vessels.
The work is part of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ Green Shipping Corridor Construction Support Project, which is developing the technical framework needed to introduce ammonia propulsion in Korean shipping.
