Detroit design students create biobased spray paint

July 6, 2026 |

In Detroit, four students from the College for Creative Studies have developed a biobased spray paint using upcycled food waste streams. Dubbed FlowState, the students presented the innovation at the Biodesign Challenge Summit, held recently at Parsons School of Design.

The team was comprised of Maxim Van Duyne (MFA, Design for Sustainability), Abigail Carballo (BFA, Product Design), O’Dell Carson III (MFA, Color and Materials Design) and Amber Tao (MA, Color and Materials Design).

“I couldn’t be prouder,” advisor Melanie McClintock, CCS alumna and Chair of Color & Materials Design, told CCS Detroit. “The team jumped into working with the community immediately after receiving the brief and let the community’s needs drive their concept.”
