Amcor partners with Kelpi to advance bio-based coatings for paper packaging
In the UK, Plastics Today reported that packaging companies Amcor and UK-based startup Kelpi are collaborating to explore bio-based coating technologies that could enhance the performance and sustainability of Amcor’s AmFiber fiber-based packaging.
The work focuses on next-generation coating systems designed to improve barrier properties while maintaining recyclability within paper streams, according to the report.
Amcor’s R&D teams are evaluating Kelpi’s proprietary seaweed-derived coating technology. The material is designed to deliver moisture and gas barrier performance while remaining compatible with fiber recycling systems, it added.
Kelpi describes its biopolymer platform as a low-carbon material sourced from seaweed, which absorbs carbon during growth. Kelpi reports the coating thickness is about 0.01mm.
The potential benefits of using such bio-based coatings include reduced reliance on fossil fuel-derived feedstocks and greater use of renewable resources, which may contribute to a lower carbon footprint.
