Regenerative agriculture rules providing opportunity for biofuel feedstock
In Washington, recent release of the USDA’s final rule on Regenerative Agricultural Biofuel Feedstocks, together with the President’s Executive Order Advancing the Future of Agriculture, represents a significant step forward for science-based policy that rewards farmers who adopt innovative practices, reduces dependence on imported agricultural inputs and strengthens America’s position as the global leader in productive, sustainable agriculture.
The USDA’s final rule establishes a rigorous, science-based framework for quantifying and crediting farmers for the agricultural practices they use on their farms. Its adoption gives growers the flexibility to integrate modern nitrogen management tools in ways that fit their specific operations. The rule’s recognition of biological nitrogen as a creditable practice is a meaningful step forward. Nitrogen management is the single largest driver of greenhouse gas emissions in crop production, and biological alternatives can help reduce nitrous oxide emissions and upstream manufacturing costs associated with conventional fertilizers.
