MOL expands bio-LNG supply for car carriers to Mediterranean ports
In Japan, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines signed a term agreement with Swiss energy company Axpo to supply bio-LNG to its LNG-fueled car carriers at Málaga and Barcelona in Spain.
The deal extends MOL’s European bio-LNG network beyond Zeebrugge, Belgium, where deliveries began under a separate agreement in March 2025.
The fuel is made by liquefying methane produced from biomass including livestock manure and food waste. It can use existing LNG bunkering infrastructure and be burned in the company’s LNG-fueled ships without changing their propulsion systems.
The Mediterranean supply is certified under the European Union’s International Sustainability and Carbon Certification system. MOL said the expanded network will provide more regular access to bio-LNG as it uses LNG vessels as a bridge toward fuels including renewable methane, methanol, ammonia and hydrogen.
