BioCirc opens world’s largest biogas-based CCS plant in Denmark

June 23, 2026 |

In Denmark, BioCirc opens the world’s largest biogas-based CCS plant in Vesthimmerland. The plant is the first of five CCS plants in the company’s overall CCS rollout and marks the beginning of BioCirc’s BECCS platform with CO₂ capture and storage at five of the company’s eight biogas plants. By leveraging multiple value streams from biogas operations, BioCirc can expand cost-effective CO₂ displacement with permanent negative CO₂ emissions and a scalable approach that also supports CO₂ displacement in sectors such as agriculture, shipping and heavy land transport, which are generally difficult to convert.

BioCirc’s BECCS platform includes five Danish biogas plants, of which Vesthimmerland Biogas is the first in the series and currently the world’s largest biogas-based CCS plant. In addition, Favrskov Biogas, Haderslev Biogas, Grønhøj Biogas and Vinkel Biogas are being put into operation.

The CCS plant in Vesthimmerland removes 32,500 tons of CO₂ annually. The CO₂ is captured as part of biogas production, after which the liquid CO₂ is shipped to INEOS’ Greensand Future CO₂ storage facility in the Danish part of the North Sea and pumped deep below the seabed.

The project establishes a complete CCS value chain from decentralized CO₂ capture to offshore storage and is supported by the Danish Energy Agency via the NECCS fund.
