India approves E100 fuel framework, paving way for ethanol-only vehicles
In India, BioEnergy Times reported that India has formally approved the regulatory framework for the use of 100 per cent ethanol (E100) as a vehicle fuel, opening the path for the commercial introduction of vehicles designed to run entirely on ethanol.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced that the regulations enabling E100 fuel have been cleared, providing the legal framework required for automobile manufacturers, fuel retailers and testing agencies to move towards deployment of ethanol-only vehicles.
Speaking at the Sugar, Ethanol and Bio-Energy India Conference, Gadkari said the approval represents an important step in expanding the role of domestically produced biofuels and reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels, according to the report.
The move takes India beyond its existing ethanol blending program, which has primarily focused on increasing ethanol content in petrol and is moving towards wider implementation of E20 fuel, the report added.
