Jiangnan delivers world’s first 93,000 cubic meter ammonia carrier
In China, Shanghai Observer reports Jiangnan Shipyard delivered the 93,000 cubic meter very large ammonia carrier IVY COVE to Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping on June 10 in Shanghai, the first vessel of its size delivered worldwide and the first of its type to enter service in China.
The ship is built to Jiangnan’s self-developed PANDA 93A design, adapted from the yard’s large liquefied gas carrier platform with reinforced tank structures to handle ammonia’s corrosivity and higher cargo weight. It can also carry propane, butane and other liquefied petroleum gases, including segregated cargoes.
The vessel runs on an LPG dual-fuel propulsion system that Jiangnan says cuts carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent and reduces sulfur emissions to near zero compared with conventional ships. The design reserves space for conversion to ammonia fuel.
The project was the yard’s first with the owner. Commissioning of cargo systems was completed in 12 days.
