Zhong Hai Asia bunkers 2,500 tons B24 in Xiamen

In China, Southeast Net Xiamen reports the Zhong Hai Asia completed a 2,500-ton biofuel bunkering operation on February 18 at Xiamen Yuanhai Terminal, marking the first marine biofuel bunkering in Fujian Province this year and the first under Xiamen’s new biofuel safety guidelines.

This was the vessel’s first biofuel operation, with the bunkering amount covering nearly half of its fuel tank capacity—more than three times the volume of Fujian’s first biofuel bunkering last year. “Using biofuel instead of traditional fuel is an effective way for our company to reduce costs and improve efficiency,” said Captain Chi Zhangbin. The B24 biofuel blend consists of 24% sustainable waste-based biodiesel and 76% low-sulfur fuel oil, offering comparable energy output while reducing carbon emissions by approximately 20%.

Biofuel adoption in shipping remains limited, with companies hesitant due to unclear local regulations. In December 2023, the Xiamen Maritime Safety Administration introduced safety guidelines outlining standards and procedures to encourage wider use. Officials expect Xiamen’s biofuel bunkering volume to increase significantly this year, with further policy development planned to support the maritime sector’s low-carbon transition.
