Yokohama expands port fee waivers for alternative-fueled ships

In Japan, the City of Yokohama revised its port incentive program on January 1, 2026, adding new exemptions for methanol- and biofuel-powered vessels entering Yokohama Port. Ships using methanol as fuel now qualify for full port entry fee waivers, while vessels bunkering at least 300 metric tonnes of marine biofuel containing 24 percent or more biogenic content also receive full exemptions.

The updates build on existing incentives for LNG-fueled ships, LNG bunkering vessels, and ships with high Environmental Ship Index scores or Green Award certification. LNG bunkering vessels also receive wharfage fee reductions of up to 75 percent when supplying multiple fuel types.

The policy is part of Yokohama’s ongoing efforts to reduce port emissions and improve competitiveness as a regional hub for green logistics. All exemptions require formal application through the NACCS system or by fax, with supporting certificates and bunker delivery receipts submitted by agents or ship operators.

The city first introduced environmental fee reductions in 2017 and has continued to expand the scope in line with international fuel transition trends. The latest revision marks the first time methanol and biofuel-fueled vessels are formally included in Yokohama’s incentive portfolio.
