Yamaha unveils world’s first hydrogen-powered outboard at SEMA

November 13, 2024 |

At the 2024 Specialty Equipment Marketing Association Show in Las Vegas, Yamaha U.S. Marine Business Unit, Roush, and Regulator Marine revealed the world’s first hydrogen-powered outboard for recreational boats. The Yamaha H2 concept aims to lead a cleaner era for internal combustion engines in marine settings.

“Why did we decide to exhibit at SEMA? Because Yamaha and SEMA share a belief that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for carbon-neutral products, and hydrogen is a formidable contender for the future of cleaner internal combustion engines,” said Grant Suzuki, Chief of Technology at Yamaha U.S. Marine Business Unit.

The hydrogen-fueled outboard, crafted with a custom Roush fuel system and Regulator Marine hull, signals Yamaha’s multi-technology approach to carbon neutrality by 2050. “We received a tremendously positive response from show attendees,” Suzuki noted, emphasizing Yamaha’s commitment to testing and data collection on sustainable fuels.

With future integration alongside sustainable marine fuels and electric options, the H2 outboard sets the stage for Yamaha’s next leap in reducing emissions and championing a multi-fuel future for the boating industry.
