In Denmark, on May 13 European Energy and Mitsui & Co. inaugurated the world’s first large-scale commercial e-methanol facility in Aabenraa, a €100 million project producing 42,000 tonnes annually to supply Maersk, the LEGO Group, and Novo Nordisk with renewable methanol made from solar power and biogenic CO₂.
The Kassø e-methanol plant operates adjacent to the 304 MW Kassø Solar Park and combines on-site green hydrogen with captured carbon to create a fuel with up to 97% lower emissions than fossil methanol. The facility is owned by Solar Park Kassø ApS, with European Energy holding a 51% stake and Mitsui 49%.
“We are excited to receive the first e-methanol from the Kassø facility,” said Rabab Raafat Boulos of Maersk. “The future of shipping must include multiple fuel types operating alongside each other.”
LEGO’s Carsten Rasmussen said, “Later this year, we will use the material to produce select LEGO elements,” while Novo Nordisk’s Dorethe Nielsen said the project allows them “to take practical steps in decarbonising our supply chain.”
European Energy CEO Knud Erik Andersen called it “renewable energy in action,” and Mitsui executive Takashi Furutani emphasized “the importance of international collaboration in scaling low-emission solutions.”
