In Switzerland, marine power company WinGD introduced its X-DF-P engine option, offering marine operators the flexibility to run on both liquefied petroleum gas and ammonia, paving the way for vessels to adapt to changing fuel demands without major retrofits. While costs remain undisclosed, the innovative ‘pre-fit’ system targets vessels under construction for the expanding ammonia trade.
With first deliveries slated for 2027, the X-DF-P engine is designed to switch between LPG and ammonia with minimal modifications. This approach aims to help operators manage uncertainties in the evolving global fuel landscape. WinGD Vice President R&D Sebastian Hensel emphasized that the solution supports sustainable shipping by enabling a phased transition to ammonia while maintaining compatibility with current LPG supplies.
The engine, already generating interest from multi-gas carriers and very large gas carriers, is under development in sizes suitable for ammonia and LPG trades, including 52- and 62-bore models. WinGD’s design, which uses shared components for both fuels, minimizes adaptation complexity and risk, positioning shipowners to navigate dual-fuel markets with greater ease.
