Waste-to-energy plants offer sustainable solution to address landfill shortage, Malaysian minister says

November 17, 2024 |

In Malaysia, The Edge Malaysia reported that the construction of waste-to-energy (WtE) plants offer a sustainable solution to the growing shortage of sanitary landfill sites, and the escalating volume of waste generated each year, said Malaysia’s Housing and Local Government Minister, Nga Kor Ming.

The official said that last year, the country’s total solid waste production reached 14.2 million tons, adding that the government needed a new solution to the issue of waste disposal sites, which require a large area.

He stressed that this plant does not harm health, because it will be developed according to strict specifications, in line with the principles of zero waste and zero toxins that support the transformation towards a circular economy.

“This technology does not require a large area of land, and does not produce leachate, foul smell, or methane gas, which have a negative impact on the community and the environment,” he added.
